DISCUSSION OF
In the time of Butterflies
by Julie Alvarez
|
In 1960, three Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic were assassinated after visiting their jailed husbands who were suspected rebel leaders. The sisters became mythical figures in their country, where they are known as Las Mariposas (the butterflies). In this novel, the author, Julia Alvarez frames the story of the three sisters within the life of a fourth sister from 1940s, who dedicated her life to the memory of her sisters. The inspired portrait of the four women is a disturbing statement about the cost of political oppression.
Come for an evening of reading and discussion on Tuesday, Sept 9, at 8:00PM
Home of Olivia Ben Haïm, 23 rue Camille Desmoulins, 59000 Lille (near Cormontaigne). Call for directions: 03 20 22 02 53
Light refreshments will be served.
