DISCUSSION OF
Under the Banner of Heaven
John Krakauer
|
Using as a focal point the story of Mormon fundamentalist brothers Dan and Ron Lafferty, who in 1984 brutally murdered their sister-in-law and 15-month-old niece in the name of a divine revelation, Krakauer explores what he sees as the nature of radical Mormon sects. Using historical and contemporary texts, Krakauer compellingly details the history of the Mormon church from its early 19th-century creation to what it is today, a world’s fast growing religion. Through a detailled account of the brothers divine revelation that ultimately led to the crime, Krakauer poses some striking questions about the closed-minded, closed-door policies of the religion-and many religions in general.

DISCUSSION OF
In the time of Butterflies
by Julie Alvarez
|
In 1960, three Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic were assassinated after visiting their jailed husbands who were suspected rebel leaders. The sisters became mythical figures in their country, where they are known as Las Mariposas (the butterflies). In this novel, the author, Julia Alvarez frames the story of the three sisters within the life of a fourth sister from 1940s, who dedicated her life to the memory of her sisters. The inspired portrait of the four women is a disturbing statement about the cost of political oppression.
