Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Published by olivia under Description

Welcome to the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner of the American Club of Lille!

In partnership with the Ecole Active Bilingue Jeannine Manuel (EABJM), in a relaxed atmosphere, American Club of Lille members, and children from the EABJM school gather and socialize around the traditional meal of turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, children play a representation of the pilgrim story, and everyone mingles and chats!!

Since the beginning of the American Club of Lille (ACL) in 1991, the Club has never failed celebrating Thanskgiving. It started small in a restaurant in Lambersart, and by word of mouth it reached a peak of 200 people by the 3rd Thanksgiving. Today, to stay manageable, however, the ACL Thanksgiving celebration is restricted to English-speaking people and their immediate family.

Check Upcoming Events (on left column) for next Thanksgiving Dinner in Lille, or contact Julie Pattou if you would like to join us!

Hope to see you there!

Stephanie Brown, an American military wife, living in Lille, with an interest in reading and socializing, started the American Club of Lille Bi-Monthly Book Club in September 2007. Stephanie went back to the US in March 2009. Kelsey Bennett, another American military wife and young mother, volunteered to continue, but it is Kelsey’s turn to go back home, so Carol Kulmayer will be the new leader of the Book Club. Thank you, Carol!

Graré American Foodstore ‘07

Published by olivia under Events

September 16, 2007
1:00 pmto7:00 pm

A single car loaded with Bobby Lopez and Vincent Larregle, along with their two first-born girls Cecilia and Megan, ended up crossing the border in search for much-needed staple items.

After a short break along the freeway for coffee and ice-cream, the shopping team resumed its course to the Graré American Foodstore, which is easy to access from Lille–no need to enter downtown Antwerp.

Graré is a rather small grocery store, with a small frozen section (bagels, flour & corn tortillas), and no refrigerated section. However, we spent nearly one hour checking down carefully each aisle and loading two full carts of groceries.

Despite the hefty price tag, the outing is worth it, being definitely a trip down memory lane for food items one grew up / lived with.

Back to the Lille area, an impromptu dinner at Vincent’s with macaroni & cheese and Sloppy Joe ended nicely the shopping trip.

Holiday Coffee and Cake Social
Sunday, December 16, 3-6pm

MAISON DES ASSOCIATIONS
72-74 RUE ROYALE
59000 LILLE

To start the holiday season in the American tradition, you are invited with your family to the beautiful Maison des Associations in Lille on Sunday afternoon.

There will be caroling and crafts/coloring and a movie for children! There is an outside courtyard area for children to play and we request that if you are bringing children, to bring something for them to play with outside if they so desire and the weather is good.

There will be a “white elephant” gift exchange for those who wish to participate (adults only). A “white elephant” gift exchange is where you bring in a goofy/silly/ old gift that you might have in your basement or sitting around somewhere unused. You can also purchase something, as long as the gift value is under 10 euros. For every adult wishing to play, bring the gift, wrapped, and we will have a fun time passing them around in a lottery type fashion. You never know what you might take home! (not mandatory… only if you want to participate).

We will all enjoy a cup of hot cider, a glass of wine, or a slice of cake.

Please bring a softdrink drink and your favorite holiday dessert to share.

Participation Cost

ACL members 5 euros
Guests 8 euros

Free for children 12 and under.

Contact Stephanie Brown for reservation.
